Pikes Peak Koi & Water Garden Society hosts free annual pond tour

Jun 23, 2026 01:47PM ● By Lisa Lowdermilk

Few backyard features are as serene as koi fish gliding through a water garden, their scales shimmering beneath dappled sunlight.

Next month, residents can see that beauty up close during the Pikes Peak Koi & Water Garden Society’s 37th annual Pond Tour, on August 1-2.

The free, self-guided tour gives visitors a chance to explore local ponds, gather ideas for their own yards and talk with people who know what it takes to keep koi, plants and water features healthy.

The number of ponds varies each year, but the club aims to feature about 10.

“Our members open their yards to inspire not only about building or updating your own pond, but also to share landscaping ideas,” said club President Bob Oatman, 68.

Club members help beginners and experienced pond owners learn how to build water gardens that are safe for both koi and plants. The club formed in 2025 when the Southern Colorado Koi Club and the Pikes Peak Water Garden Society merged.

Phil Goulding, 75, was a founding member of the Southern Colorado Koi Club in 2009 and belonged to both organizations before the merger.

“Come to meetings and talk to us,” Goulding said. “You’ll get a different perspective from sellers versus people who are members of our club.”

That advice can be helpful for beginners, as some products sold for ponds and water gardens may not be safe for koi, and club members can help newcomers avoid costly mistakes.

“Some members join to learn how to build their pond correctly, the first time,” said Oatman, 68. “We’re not selling anything. We are only sharing and promoting the hobby we love.”

Having a pond or koi is not required to join the club.

“Only a love for nature, fish or gardening,” Oatman added.

Membership costs $10 a year for an individual or $15 for a family.

The club meets the second Thursday of each month from March through October at Mountain View Church of Christ, 1080 E. La Salle St. in Colorado Springs. Guests are welcome to attend meetings before joining.

Because the seasons play such an important role in koi care and water gardening, the club takes a break from November through February. Its final gathering of the year is an annual barbecue in October.

“Being a member not only provides education about ponding, but also the social interaction we all need,” Oatman said.

The Pond Tour takes place August 1-2 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Details and tour maps will be available online July 27.
