At Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo, visitors can take a class, volunteer, attend a performance or explore the Buell Children’s Museum—all on one campus at 210 N. Santa Fe Ave.“
It’s a place where people can come in and experience something different each time,” said CEO Andy Sanchez, a Pueblo native who joined the board in 2015 before stepping into the top leadership role.
For more than 50 years, Sangre de Cristo has remained a cultural hub in Southern Colorado. Some people come for weekly classes, while others stop in for exhibits, performances or special events.
Volunteers are a big part of what keeps it going.
The Arts Associates, a volunteer group that has supported the center for decades, includes about 30 members—most of them seniors.
“They are movers and shakers with the art center,” Sanchez said. “Anything that supports our mission, they’re involved in.”
During First Friday Art Walks, Arts Associates welcome visitors and answer questions. They also support the center year-round by helping with theater productions and other programs.

Some also teach classes.
Chris Wright, a longtime participant who serves on the board of trustees, leads card-making classes that draw a mix of ages.
“The arts center is a huge part of Pueblo—it’s really a jewel for the community,” she said. “The prices are very reasonable. I think they keep it that way so anyone who wants to participate can.”
Classes in ceramics, painting and mixed media also give participants of all ages a chance to try something new or revisit a longtime interest.
The center also partners with Mt. Carmel Veteran Services to offer an Art Expression class for veterans and their families. Taught by Ashley Martin, the weekly class gives participants time to work on creative projects at their own pace.

“We hope to strengthen connections with Pueblo County Veterans Services to increase awareness of our offerings and provide more opportunities for veterans to engage in creative, enriching experiences,” said Michael Willard, who works in Sangre de Cristo’s experience and membership services department.
As a nonprofit, the center also offers scholarships to help make classes accessible.›
“We want to provide opportunities for people who might not otherwise have them,” Sanchez said.
