Colorado Springs Breakfast Club Helps Singles 50+ Find Friendship and Community

Feb 05, 2026 01:53PM ● By By Lisa Lowdermilk

Meeting other singles as a senior can be challenging, but the Colorado Springs chapter of The Breakfast Club makes companionship easier and fun.

Founded in Denver in 2002, the club has expanded to chapters in Colorado Springs, Castle Rock and Fort Collins. While it offers a variety of activities, the monthly breakfast gatherings at the Elks Lodge, 3400 N. Nevada, are especially popular.

“You get to meet new members and enjoy hearing stories from old friends,” said Mary Bucholz, 75, who joined the club in 2011 after her husband died.

More than 80 members belong to the local club and over a third regularly enjoy the Elks’ breakfast buffet and conversation. In June, the group swaps breakfast for a picnic at a local park to celebrate the local club’s anniversary.

Other get-togethers keep the calendar just as lively, including birthday bashes, overnight trips to ghost towns and museums. Games Day brings friendly competition as members play cards, cribbage and board games like Qwirkle, Scrabble and Rummikub.

“[Playing games] gives you the opportunity to sit with someone new,” said membership coordinator Cecilia Nerad, 75, who joined the club in 2007.

Although The Breakfast Club is geared toward single adults 50 and older, it’s intentionally not a dating club.

“We don’t try to set people up,” Nerad explained. “We try to place newcomers near someone who’s been with the club awhile. We want members to socialize with everyone.”

Members range from their mid-50s to 94, so newcomers are likely to find someone they connect with.

Support also extends beyond scheduled events. A “hearts and flowers” volunteer sends cards to members who could use a little extra care, and fellow members-turned-friends often go further.

“We’re there for people when they need us. We take care of each other,” Nerad said.

For more information about The Breakfast Club, visit TBC50plus.org/TBC_CSC.html or call Nerad at 719-495-3262.

Guests may attend up to three times before they’re asked to join the club. Membership is $25 a year.
