Air Force veteran, long-time dancer celebrates 100th birthday

John Mazzella, a former Chief Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, celebrated his 100th birthday in March surrounded by family and friends. An active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4051 and the International Dance Club, both organizations hosted birthday parties for the former long-distance runner and military weather observer. At his request, the International Dance Club hired his favorite band, Carlos and the Boys for the celebration, which drew family members from across the country. The Italian-American veteran served in the Air Force for 30 years with assignments in Germany, Colorado Springs and Korea. Notably, the German air base where he was stationed from 1948 to 1949 participated in the Berlin Airlift after Soviet forces blockaded rail, road and water access to Allied-controlled areas of Berlin. Mazzella attributes his longevity to quitting smoking at a young age, working out at home and dancing regularly.
