In 1903, the Cripple Creek District was known as the world’s greatest gold camp. After the powerful Western Federation of Miners (WFM) called a sympathy strike, Colorado’s anti-union governor activated the National Guard and state militia, declared martial law, and, with the help of Pinkerton spy James McParland, destroyed both the strike and the WFM.

Mary Ellen Johnson: Mary Ellen is the author of three Travels Across Time books. The latest is The Golden Promise of Cripple Creek, which is about the Colorado Labor Wars. She is currently working on a six-book series about 1893-94 Cripple Creek - Victor.
