Come join the communities of Lake George and Florissant in a day to celebrate our heritage, our culture, and community life!
In 2026, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, while Colorado marks the 150th anniversary of statehood. As part of these historic milestones, the communities of Lake George and Florissant invite everyone to celebrate their rich history and mountain heritage at Flo-Geo Heritage Day.
The Florissant and Lake George area has played an important role in Colorado’s development. Florissant Fossil Beds preserves evidence of ancient life dating back millions of years. The region was home to Native Americans, primarily the Utes, before attracting explorers, mountain men, miners, ranchers, and homesteaders.
Judge James Costello established a trading post in the area and named it Florissant. George Frost later built a dam on the South Platte River, creating a reservoir that supplied ice to Denver and nearby mining camps. When the Midland Railroad arrived, the ice industry expanded, and George’s Lake eventually became known as Lake George.
Today, visitors can explore this history through sites such as the Pikes Peak Historical Society Museum and the Florissant Cemetery, where Civil War veterans are buried.
Flo-Geo Heritage Day takes place Saturday, July 25, with activities for all ages, many of them free. The day begins with breakfast at the Florissant Fire Station. The Cripple Creek Donkeys will help welcome guests, and visitors can participate in an online auction benefiting the Florissant Fire Protection District.
Event passports will be available for attendees to collect stamps at participating locations. Featured destinations include Florissant Fossil Beds, Hornbek Homestead, the Pikes Peak Historical Society Museum, the Teacherage, the Grange, Granite Canyon General Store, and Lake George Community Park.
Activities include demonstrations, craft vendors, Wild West reenactors, live entertainment, student art displays, and more. Visitors are also encouraged to enjoy local restaurants in both communities.
Flo-Geo Heritage Day is made possible through the support of local businesses, organizations, volunteers, and community members dedicated to preserving and sharing the area's heritage. Everyone is invited to spend the day surrounded by mountain scenery, local history, friendly hospitality, and family-friendly fun.
